Conference: Details on Keynote for The Politics of Borders and Belonging

Dr. Erin Tolley is the keynote speaker for the Politics of Borders and Belonging at Home and Abroad. Dr. Tolley will be speaking at 11:30am on Friday, May 6th at Queen’s University. A brief synopsis of Dr. Tolley’s book follows, which is the basis for her keynote.

Framed: Media and the Coverage of Race in Canadian Politics

Canada prides itself on its multiculturalism and acceptance of diversity, but Erin Tolley argues that race still matters in Canadian politics. In this presentation, she will present findings from her new book, which examines the frames and narratives underpinning electoral news coverage. Her analysis shows that racial minority politicians receive more negative and less prominent media coverage than their white counterparts, and their portrayal pigeonholes them as less politically viable. Dr. Tolley argues that this is a function of racialized assumptions, institutional biases and news norms that regard whiteness as standard. The prognosis is grim and one that calls into question Canada’s commitment to a robust and inclusive democracy.

Erin Tolley is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto. She received her PhD from Queen’s University, where she was also a Trudeau Foundation Scholar.
